I hope to play with a couple of different dimensions and sizes this year myself. For the most part, you can customize your board so it is perfect for you. When I first switched to this board it took my amateur riding to the next level and kicked me into the women’s outlaw division, which I won that year at the world championships. How many of the wakeboard companies can you call and tell them what colors you want, to shave a half inch of the length off and make the board thicker? What I like best about my board is how beginner and advanced it can allow you to be. He is a true Santa cruz ocean skimmer that had never been behind a boat before he showed up, brought his Victoria skim board and started instantly landing shuvs and shuvs and more shuvs and killed it! Yes there are many boards out in the wakesurfing industry right now, but when you find a board company that is HUGE in the ocean skim world, why re-invent the wheel? They know what they are doing and the ocean skim boarders already can see that, now the wake skim boarders are figuring it out. I remember the first time pro skimboarder Cole Kerby rode with us. It did not take long for fins to show up on these boards because people started realizing that this board can simulate an ocean like feeling when riding behind your boat. Six time World Champ Bri Chmel, as a finless rider, took it behind her boat and turned it into a wake surf board. These boards are originally made as true skim boards that you can ride in the ocean. It is still regarded to be the world championships. One of the things I value about Victoria Skimboards is the history behind it. It is structured to make it as good as possible for the competitors, as opposed to making it a platform to promote Victoria Skimboards. It is a skimboarder-centered competition. It is our way of giving back to the sport we love. Q: Could you tell me a little bit about the international skimboard competition you host?Ī:We started in our second year in business in 1976. That is why we are such a world center for art as well. Being different and trying new things is integral to the Laguna Beach mindset. The shoreline is very steep, totally unlike most other parts of California.Įconomically, because it is a somewhat wealthy community, people are able to buy somewhat expensive beach toys.Ĭulturally, Laguna Beach has always been a very tolerant community. It is geologically unique because the waves in Laguna Beach are smaller than nearby towns, so we had to make do with what we had. Q: What made you decide to start your business?Ī:Clearly it had potential to grow into a worldwide sport.Ī:It has unique geological, economic and cultural conditions. We have momentum, and we reinvent constantly. We have been around a lot longer than our competitors, and we know what to focus on. Q: Why are your skimboards better than others available?Ī:Our cumulative experience. It works the legs instead of the arms, and it is good when the swell is small or there is no surfing nearby. Q: How does skimboarding compare to surfing?Ī:Skimboarding is a lot like skateboarding on a liquid ramp. Q: How long have you been interested in skimboarding?Ī:Since age 9, when I first saw it at Victoria Beach in 1961. Now, almost 33 years later, Haines and his wife, Lynn, own Victoria Skimboards, a huge name in the skimboarding industry. Going back to his dream of making skimboards with his buddy, Peter Prietto, Haines put that dream into action. He had lost interest in pursuing a career as a veterinarian, making his biology degree from Stanford useless to him. In 1975, Charles “Tex” Haines was gluing straps onto Rainbow sandals and trying to determine how to spend the rest of his life.
